Drive thru with a difference

On Sunday I completed the first Essex Topless Ladies Car Rally - a treasure hunt drive through North Essex in a convertible car with the wind in my hair ... and my hair in my face!

It was a great day out and all for a good cause, raising money for Cleft, the cleft palate charity. Although I had planned to drive my husband's TR7, in the end it wasn't road-ready and my co-driver became the driver, bringing her TVR up from Kent. Vroom, vroom! I made an excellent navigator...

We managed to be in pole position at lunch time, a feat which earned us a bottle of wine each from Great Bardfield Vineyard, the start and finish point of the rally. By the end of play we had slipped to second, but were rewarded with two more bottles of wine.

I'd recommend this rally to anyone; they are planning to run it again next year. It's huge fun, not madly competitive and open to all convertibles. Sadly, despite the midsummer date, the weather was a bit dreary until mid afternoon. However, it didn't dampen spirits and we merrily waved to other contestants, drivers and pedestrians as we zoomed through the countryside and villages hunting down the answers to random clues and being quizzed at checkpoints on anything from herbs to antiques.
